Skin Stress Solutions

Stress is a big factor in our lives today during this COVID-19 health crisis. Stress affects your body, including hair, nails, and skin. Since stress is part of our lives today, it is important how you manage it. Stress creates a chemical in your body that often makes your skin more sensitive. This is because stress causes your body to make extra hormones like cortisol, which tells glands in your skin to make more oil. Oily skin is more prone to acne and other skin problems. Stress can aggravate psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema.  Increased cortisol also triggers an increase in blood sugar, which can damage collagen and elastin that plump and smooth the skin. When stressed, blood is directed away from the digestive system causing it to become more acidic. This creates unbalanced digestion, which in turn can lead to more skin problems such as dryness, blemishes and dullness, or sometimes a combination. If you’re stressed, you might skip part of your routine, which can worsen your skin issues. We have developed a top 10 list of how you can address your stress and skin issues.

Top 10 Ways to Ease Stress on Your Skin

You probably can’t avoid stress completely during this time of shelter in place, but you can try ways to manage it.

  1. Don't neglect your skin. Take care of it, even if you're tired or stressed.

  2. Get regular exercise. It's good for your skin and the rest of your body.

  3. Take time for yourself to do something you enjoy, even if for only 10 minutes. Take a bath, apply a mask, read a book.

  4. Take a walk around the block practicing social distancing of course.

  5. Practice stress management techniques, such as breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, or visual imagery.

  6. Get enough sleep. At least 8 hours each night is ideal, but more is OK during this time.

  7. Say no. It's OK to set limits and boundaries to lower your stress.

  8. Talk to someone. Seek support from a friend or a professional therapist. There are many tele-med resources currently to help. We recommend regular video chatting with distant family/ friends.

  9. Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet. This may be hard during this extended time at home, but it will help.
