Does the COVID vaccine cause swelling?

The FDA advisory committee reviewing the new Moderna COVID vaccine has noted a specific side effect that may be of interest to those reading this blog. There has been noted swelling in those receiving the vaccine involving several trial participants who have cosmetic facial fillers.

Basically the study has noted that some patients experienced swelling and inflammation in the area of the filler following the Moderna vaccine. Those with the side effects reportedly had cheek filler within six months prior to their vaccine and one patient had lip filler done two days after the vaccine. The lip swelling was reportedly the most significant of the swelling, and the correlation is suspected due to the time between filler injections and the vaccine. All were treated with steroids and anti-histamines and all of their reactions resolved, according to reports.

Cosmetic fillers are not all the same. Some contain more biostimulators that are designed to activate the immune system creating your own body’s production of collagen, but this can be identified by your immune system as foreign and may create a temporary reaction. According to some scientists, it is the compound polyethylene glycol, also known as PEG, that may have caused allergic reactions. PEG is also found in other drugs and is known to trigger reactions in certain rare occasions.

Out of 30,000 subject trials, there are three of these reactions that have been noted by the research, so do not let this be a deterrent to getting vaccinated or to having safe cosmetic facial fillers. Just have the conversation with your practitioners and be prepared to address this rare side effect. Doctors said in all the cases the reaction to the vaccine was easily treatable. Moderna plans to place a warning on its prescribing information.
