Turn Back Time With a Photofacial

One of our favorite treatment options available at SkinSpaMED is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), or photofacial. This procedure is a non-invasive treatment that erases skin damage without disrupting the skin's surface – hence, minimal to no downtime.

Photofacial is a term for a skin treatment that uses some kind of light-based technology, primarily for boosting collagen, treating brown spots, and diminishing broken capillaries.  Other names for photofacials are foto facials, facial rejuvenation and photo rejuvenation.

A photofacial involves directing short pulses of visible light over the skin's surface. This light focuses on certain skin imperfections such as age spots and other pigmentation irregularities, small blood vessels and background redness as seen with rosacea and fine lines. There are other lasers and treatments that focus on these concerns separately; however, this is a great option to address all complaints simultaneously.

An IPL photo facial is a good choice if you have a number of different goals: plumper, younger-looking skin, faded brown spots, fewer broken capillaries and less overall redness, called diffused facial redness.

Before the treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the skin. During the treatment, a cool gel is applied to the area to be treated. The smooth glass surface of the IPL headpiece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are administered.

Depending upon the number of conditions you are treating and the severity of the individual problem, a series of 5 or 6 photofacial sessions may be required. By dividing the full treatment into several sessions, the procedure provides gradual, long-term improvement with very low risk and with no downtime.

Photofacials are a good choice for people who want to boost collagen or treat acne. Their collagen-boosting, facial rejuvenation properties have been proven with medical research. The results won’t be as dramatic as plastic surgery, but it’s a gentler, more natural, less expensive way to go.
