Lip Filler: Enhancement vs Augmentation

Lip fillers have taken the cosmetic world by storm, becoming a popular non-surgical procedure to plump up the lips. However, there's often a bit of confusion about the use of lip filler and truthfully, how lip filler is used really comes down to the injector that is placing it.  Did you know that lip filler can be used to both enhance and/or augment the lip and mouth area?  While the two terms might sound interchangeable, they actually refer to two distinct goals with lip fillers.

Lip Enhancement: Focuses on Subtly Improving Your Natural Appearance

The primary goal of lip enhancement is to boost the natural shape, structure, and volume of the lips without drastically altering the original appearance.

With this approach, the injector uses a filler, often hyaluronic acid-based, to add subtle volume and to smooth out lip lines. It's about restoring the youthful plumpness and defining the lip borders, not creating a new shape or adding size.  Lip enhancements can also help to rehydrate the lips!

The changes are discreet, amplifying the natural beauty of one's lips.

A lip enhancement is ideal for clients who want to restore the youthful appearance of lips that may have thinned over time or those who want to accentuate their natural lip shape without a dramatic change.  It’s also great for first-time lip injection clients that want to test out the treatment before doing anything dramatic.

Lip Augmentation: Crafting a New Look

When using filler for lip augmentation the goal is typically to increase lip volume, alter the shape, or adjust the lip's proportion.  More product is generally used and the injector will focus on giving the client lips that are noticeably different.  Lip filler can also be used to alter the cupid’s bow or balance the upper and lower lips differently.

The overall approach and goal with lip augmentation is more transformative and ideal for clients looking for a significant change in their lip size or shape, or who have always wanted a different lip silhouette than their natural one.

Are lip fillers reversible?

Some first-time lip filler clients are apprehensive about getting lip injections.  They are concerned they won’t like them, or they will make them look too different.  While we firmly believe if you come to SkinSpaMED you’ll love your results, if you don’t, lip fillers are completely reversible.  In as little as one office visit we can start the process of returning your lips to the way they were pre-filler.
